Cliff on Christmas, Michael Jackson, Daniel Bedingfield and gays

In a series of recent media interviews in the UK, Cliff has commented on several major sources of debate and controversy over the past year.
Referring to growing demands to drop references to Christmas from festive displays in countries such as the US and UK, Cliff told an interviewer on Sky News "This whole political correctness thing bugs me like mad. I was so upset when they said they were going to call the lights in London 'Winter lights'.
"I've got friends who are Asian, I wish them Happy Dwale, they wish me Happy Christmas. In fact they enjoy Christmas. And when I've been there and there's Dwale going on I've enjoyed that too, to be honest with you."
"I'm not so sure why they're so upset about the sensitivity of other religions who actually don't mind that we celebrate Christmas."

In regards to Michael Jackson, Cliff cited Thriller in urging people to appreciate the troubled King of Pop's music on it's own terms.
He says, "I don't think there's anyone who could approach Michael  Jackson for sheer brilliance.  Every song is perfect, every  performance magnificent.
"I don't think what's gone on since should taint the music - you judge the record on its own terms."

Referring to harsh media criticism of Daniel Bedingfield's latest album, Cliff commented in another interview, "I think that Daniel Bedingfield is really special.  He  has a great voice and a great writer who ought to have a long career. It annoys me that the music industry is so short-term; I talked to Daniel about it because he had a bit of hiccup with his latest record.  I said, 'Look, my first singles went #1, then #7, then #17 and I'm still here.' These are just the things that toughen you up as an artist."

On the controversial issue of homosexuality, Cliff argued that the Church has to "learn to deal" with homosexuals" and criticised a recent Vatican directive banning the ordination of gay priests.
I'm sad because we have to learn to deal with everything. Everything has changed. The church has got to come to terms with the fact that things have changed since even Jesus has died. It's only a mere 2,000  years.
"There are gay people in this world. Some of them are very talented. Some of them could be great priests."

Shadow Tony Meehan dies at age 62

A founding member of The Shadows, Tony Meehan has died at age 62.
The Shadows guitarist Bruce Welch said Meehan died in hospital on Monday from head injuries sustained in a fall.
"It is so tragic," he said. "Tony was a hugely influential drummer and a very clever arranger."
Welch told the BBC News website that Meehan had "a unique style".
"Tony was only 15 when we first played together but he was already a really good drummer," he said.
Sir Cliff Richard said he was "shocked" to hear of Meehan's death.
"There's no doubt that he was a major force in creating The Shadows' distinctive sound," he said.
"His innovative drumming was the backbone of the band, and his aggressive yet sparse style was similar to Ringo Starr's five years later with The Beatles."
Sir Cliff added: "Affectionately known as The Baron because of his desire for the very best in all aspects of his life, Tony took his commitment to the band hugely seriously.
"It seems horrifying that a domestic accident should take his life at such a relatively young age, and my deepest sympathy goes out to his wife and family."
Cliff and Tony last worked together at Cliff's 30th anniversary concert The Event at Wembley Stadium in 1989.
I would like to offer my deepest sympathies to Tony's friends and family at this time.

CRO corrects recent press statements regarding expensive New York lunch

The Cliff Richard Organisation has released the following statement:
A widely-reported story in the press concerned Cliff and Olivia Newton-John 'gorging' themselves in a New York restaurant and running up a bill of thousands of dollars.   This is wildly inaccurate, and Cliff and Olivia are anxious to set the record straight.   The lunch was the result of an auction held last year at the Cliff Richard Tennis Foundation's annual gala evening at Hampton Court Palace.   Cliff and Olivia kindly made themselves available to lunch with the highest bidder, who was eventually Lord Ashcroft, a friend of Cliff's and a long-time generous supporter of the Tennis Foundation.   Lord Ashcroft bid £10,000 for the special occasion, all of which went towards financing Cliff's tennis initiative to primary school children.   The lunch was eventually scheduled for when Cliff and Olivia were in New York together in November.   Quite properly, the meal was a splendid one, with Lord and Lady Ashcroft as guests, and it was naturally Cliff who was responsible for paying the bill.   Reports of the meal costing thousands of dollars are totally untrue.   Cliff's final bill - including the tip - totalled $633.65 for four diners.   Receipts are available should any member of the press wish to check and correct the story - we won't hold our breath!

Cliff backs copyright fight

Sir Cliff Richard has lent his name to the UK music industry's campaign to lobby the EC to review the copyright laws.  Sir Cliff, who began recording in 1958 and whose first hit Move It is due to fall out of copyright in 4 years' time, has submitted an 11-point document to the EC claiming he is "appalled" there are no plans to extend the term of copyright.  The singer says in his submission "there is a manifest injustice in awarding authors a period of protection which exceeds their lives by 70 years while at the same time allowing sound recordings to fall into the public domain within the lifetime of the artists whose performances are embodied in them."  Sir Cliff adds that if his works do fall out of copyright soon he will "lose control over the way in which my recordings are exploited in the future" and also suffer loss of remuneration.

Sir Cliff Goes Street

Taken from: news.com.au
PORTUGAL has honoured British pop veteran Sir Cliff Richard by naming a street after him in a southern fishing town where he bought a home in the 1960s.

Albufeira Mayor Desiderio Silva said the homage was well-deserved because of Richard's role in "promoting tourism to the area in the British market". The 61-year-old singer, dubbed the Peter Pan of Pop because of a career that has spanned four decades and included 14 number one hits, was on hand for the ceremonies, which included a night fireworks display.

Richard was among the first famous names to buy property in Portugal's southern Algarve coast, which has become one of Europe's top tourism destinations. He has since sold his Albufeira home, but owns a nearby vineyard that produces red wine.

Ian Samwell Dies At Age 66

Ian Samwell, the man who wrote a song which launched Cliff and changed British rock forever on the bus to the recording studio, died at his Sacremento, California home on March 13th aged 66.
Ian wrote Move It, named by the American Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame as one of the most influential songs of all time, on the Greenline bus on the way to the recording of what was to be Cliff's first single Schoolboy Crush. Move It, however, soon proved a far more popular, and better, song and thus the single was flipped and history was made. It went on to peak at No.2 in the UK charts.
Orignally backing Cliff on guitar as part of the original 'Drifters', Ian soon left the band and went on to right some of Cliff's most memorable early hits, most notably Gee Whiz It's You which hit No.4 in the UK charts and sold over 1 million copies worldwide.
He continued to be involved in the music scene and in 1971 produced the first album from the band America. This album included the hits A Horse with No Name, I Need You, and Sandman. He continued to produce, arrange and write for various musicians.
The cause of death was heart failure. Ian had a heart transplant eleven years ago. Ian will be sorely missed, and all my deepest sympathies, and those of all Cliff and music fans I'm sure, go out to his family and friends.

Cliff Kicked In The Teeth

By Clare Balding, Evening Standard

The Lawn Tennis Association is in danger of losing both the fund raising and the motivational skills of two of the highest-profile supporters of the sport in Britain. Sue Barker and Cliff Richard, who between them have introduced more than 300,000 children to the game through The Cliff Richard Tennis Trail are both at their wits' end and on the verge of backing out of the scheme altogether. The reason for their dissatisfaction is the LTA's decision to withdraw funding from the scheme. Each year, the initiative puts 350,000 worth of new facilities into schools, encourages children to take up the game, funds coaching and gives youngsters who would not normally get access to tennis courts the chance to discover the game and improve their skills.

For the last five years, the LTA has given 75,000 each year and, more importantly, its affiliation to the scheme while Barker and Richard have raised the rest of the money and have promoted it. "Both Cliff and I feel it's a kick in the teeth," Barker told me. "We both give our time for nothing and have done so for the last 20 years. "We've been a registered charity for the past 10 years and have had LTA backing for the last five. "We are so disappointed that having introduced so many kids to tennis over that time, some of whom have gone on to become full-time coaches, the LTA seems to think that we've not done a good job. "It has taken away our funding without giving us a chance to change anything it didn't like or didn't approve of. I know how I was discovered and what made me tick as a youngster and I should know how to communicate that to the children today." As a former French Open champion, Wimbledon semi-finalist and now presenter of the BBC's coverage of the Championships, Barker is arguably the bestknown female face in British tennis while Cliff Richard is, well - he's Cliff isn't he? To lose the support of two huge names would be more than careless. As for the LTA, its argument is that the central funding has changed so that each county is now responsible for its own funds under a scheme known as "Club Vision". An LTA press officer told me that it is down to the Cliff Richard Tennis Trail to make individual approaches to the counties and "if it is deemed suitable for that area, it will be treated on its merits". While I accept that the LTA is investing huge amounts in grassroots tennis, especially in mini tennis, it seems crazy to have alienated two such powerful magnets for the game. "Both Cliff and I are devastated," said Barker. "To be honest I feel so gutted that I'm thinking of pulling out of it altogether and if that happened, they would lose over 300,000. We felt we were helping the LTA, not acting in opposition to it and I can't believe it didn't give us the opportunity to change before taking the funding away completely." Sue Barker is not a woman given to meaningless outbursts or publicity-seeking bouts of controversy. She is genuinely upset and British tennis is in danger of losing a valuable motivator and supporter. Were the game in this country in a healthier state it might be able to afford that luxury but it is not and it cannot.

Cliff Scanning Through Songs For Upcoming Album

Cliff has revealed in interviews with the South-East Asian press that Michael Omartian, who has produced albums for singers such as Rod Stewart and Amy Grant, is producing his upcoming Christmas album and will be one of three or four producers on a new album planned for release in 2004.
For the Christmas album Cliff still has three songs to complete, which he plans to do at the end of March. For his all new album, however, Cliff is heading to Nashville, Tennessee.
"It's the music centre of the world," says Cliff, "and there are some really wonderful songwriters, producers and musicians there." "Some of the best funky pop songs are coming out of country and western music," he added. "They're very aggressive and have a good melody and some great sounds."
"This is a project that I feel is more pop-rock. I feel that at this stage of my life, the more new things I can try, the better it is for me. You can get energised by trying something different and new, working with different producers and writers, people I have never met before and it is a very exciting prospect."
"At the moment I am going through about 30 to 35 different songs written by top American and British writers and I have found some wonderful songs, really fantastic songs."
"Pop rock has become an umbrella for so many types of music. You can sound like Led Zeppelin on one side and Garth Brooks on the other and still call it pop rock today."
It has also been recently reported on a Bee Gees website that Cliff has requested a hold on a few songs Barry Gibb submitted to him some time ago. The Gibb management, however, is not sure whether Cliff has made a decision on whether or not to record the songs.

Upcoming Concert Rumours

Also mentioned by Cliff in the South East Asian press is the possibility of a reunion with The Shadows. Cliff has said, however, that this couldn't happen before 2004 as The Shadows as a band no longer exist and thus would have to re-organise themselves.
There are also very strong rumours that Cliff will be returning to the Royal Albert Hall in London during spring next year for a series of concerts. This is an early rumour which and I'll keep you updated. Please do not contact The Royal Albert Hall as they will likely have no details of these dates until a much later stage.

She Likes Loud Speakers

A Cliff Richard fan who upset her neighbours by playing the star's records too loudly has been ordered to pay nearly £1,000 in fines and costs.
Sian Davies, 23, had her hi-fi seized by noise watchdogs after neighbours complained about the music being played night and day.
Environmental protection officers raided Davies's flat in Porth, Rhondda, and seized 15 amplifiers and speakers, plus 135 CDs and cassette tapes.
The disc found in her CD player was the Cliff Richard single, Peace in Our Time.
The hearing at Rhondda Magistrates Court was told that the confiscation was an act of "last resort" after Ms Davies had ignored written warnings to turn down the volume.
An abatement notice was served under the Environmental Protection Act, but council officers had to return to the property on two more occasions because of the loud music.
On Tuesday, the flat where Davies had lived was boarded up and neighbours said she had moved away.
"You could hear Cliff pounding out of the windows day and night," said neighbour Debbie Rees. "It was so loud that it was disturbing everyone around here - and lets face it, not everyone loves Cliff as much as she does," she added.
"It would be the first time I had heard of Cliff being played at such a volume," said Bill Latham, from the star's management company.
"But Cliff would not want anyone to play his music so that it caused a nuisance."
But, he admitted that he was "delighted" that the star had such young fans.

Cliff Pulls Out The Stops For Mission Estate Concert DVD

Audiences in Napier, New Zealand were treated to perhaps the most spectacular concert of Wanted On Tour which was filmed for upcoming release on DVD.
The show's spectacular lighting display was complemented by a massive set-up, including giant screens, dancers and extra props including a car moving around the stage for the rock'n'roll classic No Particular Place To Go. The video screen 'eye' from the UK tour also reappeared in New Zealand, as did the original setlist from the first leg of the tour, including fan-favourite Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon. The Wanted album has entered the New Zealand charts at No.46 this week.
While the 22,000 strong crowd at the Mission Estate winery seemed to largely enjoy concert, concerns have been voiced about the venue's handling of the largest crowd it's hosted so far and excessive consumption of alcohol. Mission Estate management have stated that they will review some of the concerns raised for future events.
Before heading to New Zealand, Wanted On Tour received a rousing reception across Australia. While some aspects of the show were changed from the UK tour, with some covers and more obscure songs dropped in favour of hits such as Devil Woman and Wired For Sound, the tour received the same enthusiastic response, garnering positive reviews in each city. Part of the proceeds of the Canberra concert were donated to the bushfire appeal, with Cliff also recording a segment for a TV bushfire appeal. In January Canberra was hit by devastating bushfires which wiped out more than three hundred homes.
The tour helped push the 2000 greatest hits compilation The Whole Story to No.26 in the Australian albums chart, and The Countdown Concert and Live In The Park to No.2 and No.3 respectively in the music video charts. Both also made the top 10 music DVD charts as Cliff's first Australian DVD releases. The 40th Anniversary Concert has now also been released on DVD in Australia by Warner Vision.
Cliff is now taking the tour through Asia, visiting territories such as Hong Kong, Thailand and South Korea for the first time in decades. This leg of the tour has been especially tailored to the Asian fans, featuring older classics such as Summer Holiday, Evergreen Tree and Congratulations which were particularly big hits in this part of the world.

Street In Portugal Named After Cliff

Albufeira, Portugal has decided to pay tribute to pop legend Sir Cliff Richard for his part in helping to promote Albufiera internationally since the 1960s and for his new role actively promoting the region through the production of wine on his farm in the freguesia of Guia. One of the oldest streets in the city , which runs parallel to the old cemetery, will now undergo a change of name from "Rua Da Caveira" to "Rua Sir Cliff Richard". The inhabitants are said to be delighted as, since time immemorial, their address has translated as "Skull Street".
Sir Cliff fell in love with Albufeira a long time ago and has owned a house in the city for many years, although he now spends most of his time on his farm at Guia, where he produces his acclaimed Vida Nova wine. He has always enjoyed excellent relations with Albufiera Câmara and is said to be delighted that they have named a street after him.

Cherie Blair Attends Charity Function With Cliff

The embattled wife of British Prime Minister Tony Blair made an appearance at a Hampton Court charity function hosted by Sir Cliff Richard during December.
The pair have been friends even before she presented him with an Ivor Novello award two years ago.  Later that year, she took a holiday at his home in Portugal accompanied by her infamous style guru Carole Caplin and Caplin's mother. She clasped Sir Cliff's arm as she posed for pictures, despite the strain of recent events.  The function raised money for the singer's tennis charity. Although Mrs Blair was guest of honour, it was a fleeting visit and she left immediately after the carol service.
