Cliff Has World's Second Favourite Song

Sir Cliff Richard has emerged ahead of the Beatles, Queen and John Lennon in a poll to find the world's most popular song. His 1979 hit We Don't Talk Any More is currently second in a poll compiled by the BBC World Service, ahead of such classics as The Beatles' Yesterday and John Lennon's Imagine. The poll is still currently underway.
Top of the list is the Tamil song Rakkamma Kaiya Thattu, reflecting the fact that India has submitted the most votes.
We Don't Talk Anymore sold over 3.5million copies worldwide, and topped the charts around the world in countries such as Britain, Germany, Hong Kong and Australia. It is also one of only three Cliff songs to reach the US top ten, peaking at #7 after becoming one of the first ten videoclips to be broadcast on the fledgling MTV.

Sir Cliff's In The Money

Pop star Sir Cliff Richard was striking a special Peter Pan coin at a mint.
The youthful singer, dubbed "The Peter Pan of Pop" was starting production of his namesake coin to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Great Ormond Street Hospital.
The distinctive flying figure of Peter Pan was being used for the first time on legal currency and is to be released by the Gibraltar Government.
Author JM Barrie left the copyright of his 1929 classic Peter Pan to the famous London children's hospital, and the provision was confirmed in his will after his death in 1937.
Royalties of play versions of the book performed around the world are still received by the hospital and it hopes to raise 10,000 through sales of the new coin.
The commemorative coin made in nickel, sterling silver and gold and is produced by the Pobjoy mint in Surrey where Sir Cliff was launching the first of a new batch.

Vida Nova Proclaimed "The Wine Of The Year"

Veteran pop star Sir Cliff Richard has chalked up the wine release of the year, with the success of the debut vintage of his Portuguese wine, Vida Nova - first seen on the Harpers stand at the LIWSF. Tesco released 3,000 bottles of the red wine on its website on 12 August, and 24 hours later all 500 six-bottle cases (at £45.54) were sold out.
Carolyn Brady of Tesco.com said: "The response is absolutely staggering. We could have sold the wine ten times over." Vida Nova is now the fastest-selling product ever on Tesco.com, knocking the DVD release of Lord of the Rings into second place.
Waitrose had a similar result when it offered 1,200 bottles on its website on 15 August - they sold out within 12 hours.
Tim Stanley-Clarke, who has been working closely on the project with Sir Cliff, winemaker David Baverstock and viticulturist Dr Richard Smart, told Harpers he was "amazed and delighted" with the response. "Although, based on the quality of the wine and the extraordinary Cliff-factor, we knew it was going to sell well," he said.
Only 27,000 bottles of the wine - grown in Sir Cliff's own vineyard in the Algarve, and a blend of Shiraz and the traditional Aragonez, Trincadeira and Mourvèdre - were produced in 2001, of which 24,000 are for sale in the UK.

Cliff Chosen As One Of 100 Greatest Brits

Cliff has also made the list which will be the basis for a television series which will screen on BBC 2 later this year. Fellow pop-Knight Paul McCartney joined him on the list, while Sir Elton John missed out.
"I'm sure this series will arouse enthusiastic debate in offices and homes all around the country. Just from talking to people I've got a real sense of how passionately they feel about the subject and who they feel is worthy of the title of Great Briton," said Jane Root, comptroller of BBC2.

Cliff Tops The Charts With Vida Nova

Cliff finally released his long-awaited wine Vida Nova last week, and it appears that he has another hit on his hands.
Stocks of the wine quickly sold out across the UK, with British supermarket chain Tesco announcing that it's the fastest ever seller on their website tesco.com.
The wine sold out within 24 hours, with fans logging onto the website to place their orders the very second the wine went on sale. 'The response is absolutely staggering. We could have sold the wine ten times over,' said Carolyn Bradley of Tesco.com. 'We knew that Vida Nova would be popular because we've been besieged by fans for months asking about the wine, but this kind of response is completely unheard of.'
Vida Nova, which comes from Sir Cliff's own vineyards near Albufeira in the Algarve region of Portugal, went on sale through Tesco.com's dedicated wine warehouse on Monday 12 August, ahead of every other British retailer. It sold even faster on its first day than the hugely popular DVD of Lord of the Rings, which was Tesco.com's previous fastest seller.
It has been announced that the Waitrose stores in Britain are likely to receive some new supplies of Vida Nova on the morning of Monday 19th August, so for those who've missed out this could be your best shot of scoring the UK's No.1 selling wine!

Cliff Joins Pop Royalty To Celebrate Queen's Golden Jubilee

More than a million people gathered in London to listen to some of the world's greatest rock and pop legends perform at Buckingham Palace in honour of the Queen's 50 years on the throne.
Sir Cliff Richard joined an eclectic line-up of stars, including Sir Elton John, Dame Shirley Bassey, gothic rocker Ozzy Osbourne, Tom Jones, S Club 7 and Beach Boys stalwart Brian Wilson to rock the normally sedate grounds of Buckingham Palace.
In the audience were 12,000 lucky members of the public who had won tickets in a national ballot to attend the event, which was also seen by up to one million people on big screens outside and 200 million more on TV around the world.
In the royal box, the queen's grandchildren, Princes William and Harry, clapped and swayed to the music while Prince Charles's longtime companion Camilla Parker Bowles, sitting nearby, sang along to the hits.
The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh arrived for the second half of the concert, just in time to hear Eric Clapton perform Layla.
Cliff performed his 1959 No.1 hit Living Doll, and was then joined by S-Club 7 and Queen Guitarist Brian May for a lively rendition of his first single Move It. He also reappeared later in the show, joining Beach Boy Brian Wilson, Emma Bunton (Baby Spice) and British pop group Atomic Kitten to sing Good Vibrations.
The Prince of Wales paid a moving tribute to his mother saying: "We feel proud of you; proud and grateful for everything you have done for your country and the Commonwealth over 50 extraordinary years, supported unfailingly throughout by my father.
The concert concluded with the Royal Family joining the stars for a rendition of the Beatles' hit Hey Jude which was followed by a rousing fireworks display.

Cliff Defends Minelli Miming

Liza Minelli returned to the stage after her highly-publicised wedding last month in New York at London's Royal Albert Hall. While she received several standing ovations, controversy eruped after allegations of miming surfaced.
Cliff was among the celebrities in attendance, and defended the star, saying at the after-show party that he  was positive she had [mimed].  He said, "She did mime some songs - maybe 3 or 4.  I personally think it is quite acceptable for an artist to mime some of the show.  I did the same when I was on stage with Heathcliff.  I had the flu for around a week and mimed every single track.  I couldn't sing a note."
"I think it is so much more difficult to mime than to actually sing because you have to step back and realise you can't give it your all because it won't look right because you are miming.  It all comes down to either giving a good performance with dancing and miming, or just straight singing."

DO NOT BUY CLIFF'S NEW SINGLE AT WOOLWORTHS!

There seems to be some mysterious computer bug at Woolworths in the UK which means the barcode for Cliff's new single Let Me Be The One won't scan and this will supposedly take them until next week to fix (which is odd in itself). Most stores, however, are selling it anyway and I know loads of fans have already bought it from one of their stores. The problem here is that they are not scanning in the barcode and thus these sales will NOT count on the charts at all. Every other item they're selling will, Cliff won't.
If you have already bought a copy at Woolworths I strongly suggest returning it and buying elsewhere as it won't effect Cliff's chart placing, registers your protest, and if you buy another copy at somewhere like HMV your sale will finally count. I would also suggest visiting:
http://www.woolworths.co.uk/help/contactus.jhtml
and either emailing or ringing Woolworths to tell them how you feel about this.
Help Cliff's new single get into the charts and go buy a copy at chart stores such as HMV as soon as possible, just avoid Woolworths!

Cliff Scores 123rd Hit Single

Sir Cliff Richard has continued his record-breaking run of hit singles on the UK charts with his latest offering, Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World, entering the UK charts at No.11 with sales of over 21,000 copies.
Somewhere Over The Rainbow is Cliff's 123rd hit single, and his 91st to reach the top twenty. In its second week the single fell to No.18, still higher than new entries from acts such as Michael Jackson and Emma Bunton.
This feat is made even more impressive when it is taken into account that the single did not make the UK top 200 airplay charts.
Cliff's new album Wanted fell from No.35 to No.42 in its fifth week, and is currently sitting at No.45 in its sixth week. Sales have actually increased over the past few weeks as the marketplace gears up for the Christmas rush and sales are now at close to 150,000 copies.

WANTED Gets Cliff Back Into UK Charts

Wanted has become Cliff's latest hit album, entering the UK charts at No.11 during one of the most competitive weeks of the year.
Exact sales figures are not yet in for the entire week, but up to the end of Wednesday sales of Wanted were up to 13,950 which means that this first week tally should be well ahead of that of his last album Real As I Wanna Be which entered at No.10 and sold 12,500 in its first week.
Steps topped the charts this week with Britney Spears' new album Britney entering at No.4, while other new entries included Pink Floyd's new compilation album Echoes at No.2, Sting's All This Time at No.3, The Best of The Corrs at No.6  and Natalie Imbruglia's album White Lilies Island at No.15 and an All Saints greatest hits album All Hits at No.18. Meanwhile, last week's chart-topper, Michael Jackson's Invincible, proved to be less than Invincible, dropping to No.5.
The album was backed by television, print and radio advertising, as well as a series of media appearances across Britain.

Midweek sales figures are showing that Wanted is heading for a top ten placing in one of the most competitive weeks of the year so far.

At this stage Cliff's chart position has the potential to either rise or fall, but he is looking a strong contender for a top ten placing. His last studio album, Real As I Wanna Be, entered at No.10 with sales of 12,500.

Cliff's Odds Improving For Christmas No.1

With the announcement that Bob The Builder won't be releasing a single this Christmas, the odds of Cliff's single Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World being this year's Christmas No.1 have been slashed from 33/1 to 10/1 by bookmakers.
A William Hill spokesman says they're taking no chances on the wily old crooner. 'Having been hit in the pocket twice before with Cliff taking the Christmas number one, we are always on the alert and take his bid very seriously.'
So now the horns are locked: Cliff must take on the favourite, Kate Winslet, and the might of the other contenders, who include Atomic Kitten, Westlife, and, perhaps most threatening of all, Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman.

Cliff Fan Who Stole £50,000 Goes Free

A woman who stole £50,000 from a monkey sanctuary to fund her obsession with Cliff Richard and Daniel O'Donnell escaped a jail sentence yesterday.
Cashier Sara-Jane Samways, 41, went to scores of gigs around the country, bought loads of souvenirs of her heart-throbs and stayed at plush hotels.
She worked on the gate at Monkey World in Wool, Dorset, where she was a trusted employee until she was caught out by CCTV.
She admitted stealing £47,750 when she appeared at Bournemouth Crown Court.
Police found piles of pop souvenirs in her home.
But she was freed by a judge yesterday after being given a 15-month suspended sentence.
The court heard that unmarried Samways' only pleasures in life were Sir Cliff, 60, and O'Donnell, and the rest of her time was spent working and taking care of her invalid mother.
Christopher Jervis, prosecuting, said Samways started working at the park in 1987.
He said: "It is a charitable organisation dedicated to the protection of primates in the park and around the world.
"A large proportion of its profits is spent on the welfare of creatures.
Judge Samuel Wiggs told Samways: "Your doctor says you cannot understand why you did it and there are no clues as to your motives."
He ordered her to pay back £48,930 to Monkey World.

The Most WANTED Album Of The Year Is Almost Here

The album features mainly covers of various songs that Cliff has always wanted to record such as You've Got A Friend, All Shook Up, What's Love Got To Do With It and Moon River as well as his upcoming single Somewhere Over The Rainbow/Wonderful World.
Papillon Records have uploaded a 60 second stream of the upcoming single on their website and they will be uploading a stream of the song's video clip later in the week. Television advertising will also begin on the 4th (you can view a complete list of shows during which Wanted will be advertised here).
To ring in the new release, Cliff took to the airwaves recording interviews for BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio Wiltshire Sound and Capital Gold who had an entire Cliff Richard Day on November 1st. Cliff also appeared on television programs GMTV, Esther, Rich & Famous and The Frank Skinner Show in the few days leading up to the November 5th release.
As a lot of Cliff fans are anxious to know how they can get this album as high as possible in the charts, I have put up a new section on the Wanted page which gives some details of where to buy it and media outlets to contact.
