Cliff's first concert of The Wanted Tour was on 15 October 2002 in The Odyssey
Arena Belfast. The show opened with a short instrumental of WIRED FOR
SOUND.
There was a large eye-shaped screen in the background which had fast-moving
images of the stage set-up being built.
Cliff then appeared on stage,
wearing a black suit, black and white shirt and sparkly belt and sang WE DON'T
TALK ANYMORE and MOVE IT. He told us during the first half we would be hearing
a lot of his Wanted album with some other material mixed in. This led onto
SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW and RIGHT HERE WAITING.
WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO
DO WITH IT was next, Cliff explained that this record had come to him first but
someone who worked for him thought it wasn't suitable and sent it back, "They no
longer work for me"....I have to say this is my least favourite song on the
Wanted CD but it sounded much better live. Three more songs from Wanted
followed - ALL SHOOK UP; MOON RIVER; LIKE STRANGERS. During the time Cliff was
singing different images and effects appeared behind on the screen.
Cliff talked about his friendship with Olivia Newton-John and sang a
beautiful rendition of her song I HONESTLY LOVE YOU - hopefully he'll get round
to recording it some day, he sat down to sing it at the back of the stage and I
just found it heart-rending. During the song different photos of Cliff &
Olivia floated behind him on the screen.
Then it was onto a Cliff
classic SOME PEOPLE.
Next up was GIRL YOU'LL BE A WOMAN SOON, with Cliff
explaining he had noticed on the Internet that several fans had requested he
sing this song - much to his surprise - this was a really first class
performance by Cliff. SHE'S A GYPSY - I was really surprised to hear Cliff sing
this one from the archives, it sounded really upbeat and great live. The first
half ended with DREAMIN'.
During the first half he also talked about Vida
Nova and pretended to slip down the steps and said that he had been thrilled to
be number one in the Tesco charts - number two was toilet rolls "good thing I
didn't bring out a curry" laughed Cliff!
I have to say the audience
didn't seem very enthusiastic about the first half - I suspect many of them
don't have the Wanted CD and therefore wouldn't have any idea what Cliff was
singing. Well the warmed up in the second half. I enjoyed the first half
immensely of course but what came next was PURE CLIFF MAGIC!!!!
Lots of
dry ice and atmospheric music and Cliff bounded on stage to assure us he was
BORN TO ROCK AND ROLL....wearing leather trousers, white and grey shirt and
sunglasses - brilliant! He took his glasses off and threw them into the
audience.
'D' IN LOVE with Cliff on guitar - great to hear Cliff do this
live again it sounded great. Another guitar player/vocalist named Anthony
Clarke joined Cliff on stage for a rendition of The Everly's hit CLAUDETTE.
Cliff kept his guitar and treated us to GEE WHIZ IT'S YOU and FALL IN LOVE
WITH YOU. The audience were really rocking at this stage. A tribute to Elvis
followed TOO MUCH and DON'T BE CRUEL, followed by THE YOUNG
ONES.
Cliff's backing vocal group (Peter/Keith/Mick) sang a medley of Green
Light/Devil Woman/Carrie and when Cliff came back on stage he had changed into a
green and black shirt, and sang ANGEL, BE BOP A LULA and a fantastic rockin'
version of NO PARTICULAR PLACE TO GO - pure MAGIC!!!!!
He then talked
about Doo Wop music which was mainly an American phenomenon and sang a couple of
songs along with his backing group. The name of one I'm not sure of but the
other was DREAM LOVER and another song which I think was SINCE I DON'T HAVE
YOU.
LAY ALL YOUR LOVE followed along with his sexy dance moves!!!! WHOLE
LOTTA SHAKIN GOIN' ON got the audience on their feet and dancing.
A
Christmas medley closed the show MISTLETOE AND WINE/WE SHOULD BE TOGETHER FOR
CHRISTMAS/SAVIOURS DAY which had everyone swaying in time and of course
MILLENNIUM PRAYER - Cliff talked about the world we lived in and that everywhere
(including Northern Ireland) peace was a desirable option.
That was it
- show over - all in all a WONDERFUL performance by Cliff and thoroughly enjoyed
by all ... especially me ... hopefully my photos will turn out well.
